In Ecuador, Baños is known as the gateway to the Amazon basin. As you make your way through mountains and scenic views, you will descend into a small town surrounded by waterfalls and hot springs.
When we first arrived we made our way to a restaurant right next to the plaza and ate delicious traditional Ecuadorian food. As we talked to the local owners they told us that Baños has been improving its gastronomic offerings, expanding taste varieties, lunch experiences and overall restaurant ambiances.
Since we arrived late in the afternoon, we decided to make our way to the hotel. We left our bags in our rooms at Luna Runtun and immediately went to the hot springs that overlook the town.
After dinner, we went to a small karaoke bar that offered artisanal beer. We walked around, slow paced in the sidewalk, stopping to look inside at the different bars, restaurants and pubs that Baños has to offer. Nightlife in town is energetic and entertaining: from artisanal beer at pubs to salsa dancing at the local Salsoteca, you are in for a good time.
When morning came we got ready quickly, we wanted to get our day started.
This town has a lot to offer. In every corner you can find Adventure Tours and Operators who are willing to take you to thrilling- yet safe- experiences. From hikes to kayaking to rock climbing and bungee jumping from a bridge, your options here are seemingly endless. Don’t worry if you have no experience and this is going to be your first time, there are activities set out for every level.
On that particular morning we decided to go rock climbing.
The rock climbing site was only a 5 minute taxi ride away from the operator situated in town. When we got there, we realized there was an entire adventure park that also offered canyoning and zip-lining. We descended by foot (3 minutes) and made our way to a hiking trail that was marked next to the river. Our instructor made us feel safe at all times, with the right equipment and safety precautions. Once we had our helmets and our harness on, we began climbing the easy trail, making it to the medium and ultimately trying the hardest. The whole adventure was exciting from beginning to end. While you climb the mountain you can listen to the sound of the river roaring beside you. Do not hesitate to take breaks and appreciate the wonderful view.
Unfortunately, we had to leave right after the rock climbing but we certainly will be back soon. Hopefully canyoning, kayaking and bungee jumping (with a little more time in the hot springs) will be part of our next Baños adventure.
If you were thinking about Baños then the answer is definitely yes! You will be surrounded by amazing landscapes, kind people, multiple activities, thrilling adventures, and soothing hot springs and spas that will surely be part of an unforgettable experience.
